Beading Glossary
Acrylic - Glassy plastic-like beads that are less expensive than metal or glass beads. Acrylic beads are available in an endless amount of shapes and colours.
Agate - A form of quartz which is available in a range of different colours from transparent to opaque. They are said to soothe your mind and improve memory.
Amethyst - A purple transparent semi-precious stone. It can vary from light to dark purple and sometimes will have fine red dots or red or blue hues. It can be used to strengthen the immune system.
Aurora Borealis (AB) - A rainbow-like finish added to beads by coating with thin layers of metal. Beads which have this finish have AB in the name.
Barrette - A long clip used to tie back hair. They can be decorated with beads and come in different shapes and sizes.
Bicone - This shape of bead looks like two pyramids or cones stuck together by thier bases.
Bugle Beads - These are thin tubular shaped glass beads similar to seed beads.
Carnelian - A reddish-orange or reddish-brown gemstone. It has a long list of metaphisical properties, including protecting the wearer from anger, jealousy and fear and help with healing in the lower abdomen area for problems such as menstrual cramps and infertility.
Charm - A small metal pendant, often of animals, shapes and symbols.
Enamel - A silicone-like substance that is baked onto metal, glass or ceramic beads to apply colour, a decorative finish or a protective coating.
Filigree - Metal beads and findings which are made up of intricate lace-like patterns.
Findings - A term used to classify a wide range of jewellery items used to make jewellery, such as clasps, ear hooks, head pins and eye pins. They are most commonly made of metal.
Hematite - A mineral form of iron oxide. They are shiny and black in colour, used for grounding.
Jasper - A member of the quartz family, it comes in lots of colours and usually named after it's pattern, like poppy jasper or leopard skin jasper. It is known as a great protective stone.
Lampwork Beads - These beads are handmade, using rods of glass that are melted over an open flame and wrapped around a metal rod called a mandrel. This is what creates the hole in the bead. No two lampwork beads are usually exactly the same due to the fact that they are handmade.
Lariat - A necklace style. It is similar to a lasso, or a Y shaped necklace.
Memory Wire - This wire holds it's circular shape and is available in ring, bracelet and necklace sizes.
Seed Beads - Very small glass beads available in a vast amount of colours.
Spacer Bead - Any small bead used as spacing between other beads.
Swarovski - Swarovski crystals are made of precision-cut lead crystal glass by the Swarovski company in Switzerland. It contains approximately 32% lead to maximise refraction of light. The huge range of swarovski beads available include bicones, pearls, rounds, assorted pendants, snowflakes, simplicity and butterflies.
